Paphos District

Paphos is credited with having some of the most gorgeous coastline views in the world. It is one of the reasons why so many people are drawn to look for homes for sale in Paphos. Many come on vacation and explore the ancient Roman and Biblical ruins, while others come to relax and enjoy the many shopping bargains that the town offers year round. Unlike Eastern towns like Ayia Napa in Famagusta District, Paphos really does enjoy a 12 month tourist season. People with houses for sale in Cyprus therefore find a ready market of buyers eager to find their 'place in the sun'.

Paphos has so many archaeological treasures that it appears on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The Roman Mosaics, Tombs of the Kings and Paphos Castle are amongst the places that are the most popular with visitors. If archaeological treasures are not your thing, there are many other things to see and do including visits to the Paphos Aquarium or Bird Park, exploring the beautiful Akamas peninsula or joining a jeep safari for the day.

Ktima (Upper Paphos) is at the top of the hill, and Kato Paphos (Lower Paphos) at the foot of the hill by the harbour. In Kato Paphos you’ll find the usual tourist shops filled with all the usual junk, but there are several excellent jewellery shops in the area and gold jewellery is very reasonably priced in Cyprus as are most precious stones. Gold is usually 18 carat and designs are either classical, taken from the island’s rich archaeological heritage - or very modern and contemporary. There are also very familiar British High Street names like Debenhams and Marks & Spencer here. Most people would agree that Paphos offers a wonderful warm sunny climate with superb resort facilities that can cater for people on a small budget up to those with plenty of money to splash around. Cyprus property in the town itself can be quite expensive, but moving just a few miles inland can see prices fall considerably.

Up the hill in Ktima there is a wonderful blend of European-style fashion and footwear shops for all the family, pottery shops and on the corner of Markarios Avenue (close to the market) a stall selling the most delicious loukoumades (tiny balls of dough that are deep fried and soaked in a honey syrup). The market is in two sections; the inside market hall is full of stalls selling local honey, spices, lace and bed linens whilst the outside area is a plethora of stalls run by local market gardeners. Close to the market are numerous traditional craft workshops including the icon painter, which is well worth visiting, chairmakers and several tailors who can make a stylish new suit in just days… not that wearing a suit is at the forefront of most people's minds when they are looking at homes for sale in Paphos - or just taking in the sun.

Of course, people who buy homes in Cyprus need all of the usual furnishings and nick-knacks that turn a house into a home. There is a great selection of shops on both sides of the road going out of Paphos towards the village of Mesoyi. If you need furniture of any kind this is the place to look - maybe add a hot tub outside your new Cyprus property while you're at it!
