Nicosia District
Nicosia (known locally as Lefkosia) is the capital, seat of government and largest city in Cyprus. With a combined population of around 350,000 this 1000 year old city is located on the Pedieos River and is virtually at the centre of the island, so within easy reach of all the major towns. Despite recent symbolic gestures shown by both the Turkish and Greek communities in removing small sections of the dividing wall, it still remains the only divided capital city in the world, divided by the "Green Line", a demilitarized zone maintained by the United Nations which includes a sizable British garrison.
The city is modern in many respects, with two large shopping malls, hundreds of restaurants and entertainment to rival any of its Mediterreanean neighbours. The main industries include textiles, leather, pottery, copper and plastics. Parts of the city have a historic feel with a Royal Palace and several Byzantine churches. The streets are in places very narrow and the older houses are very ornate. 'Laiki Yitonia' - Folk Neighborhood - is a pedestrian section, which has been carefully renovated to evoke the atmosphere of past days. The two main streets of old Nicosia, Ledra and Onasagorou, are lined with shops of every type, and both streets are pedestrian-only.The Cyprus Museum is home to a large collection of Cypriot treasures and antiques. The heart of Nicosia is Eleftheria Square, also known as Freedom Square.
People interested in Cyprus property investment will find the buy-to-let market in Nicosia is vibrant. With a year round rental market, rather than a seasonal one, Nicosia’s buy-to-let property market differs from that of many other tourist towns on the island. In fact there is a huge demand for Cyprus properties and so new construction is taking place with demand currently outstripping supply. The country's inclusion into the EU has led to an unprecedented amount of foreign and local investment. Nicosia also attracts good returns on commercial property, while prices for all types of homes in Nicosia is increasing as land gradually becomes scarcer. While Cyprus property is in demand throughout the island, Nicosia is seen as a good buy and most Cyprus properties are bought off-plan by people who are tired of the usual tourist spots on the southern shores of the island. If you intend to buy or sell Cyprus property, be sure you deal with one of the registered estate agencies on the island.
