Limassol District
Limassol is surprisingly large and sprawling, stretching between the archaeological ruins of Ancient Amathus in the east and Ancient Curium in the west. It's the 2nd largest largest town and is about one hour’s drive from the other main towns, so the shops and cultural events of the other towns are within easy reach. The main residential areas form a circle towards the outskirts of the town, where there is a steady turnover of Cyprus properties for sale. Some of the villas in Cyprus match anything that can be found on the Costas - at substantially lower prices.
In fact Limassol has something to attract everyone; there are archaeological ruins to explore, the tourist area for those who are looking for a lively nightlife, a wide range of restaurants offering every imaginable cuisine, lots of live music and concerts - and some great shops! These attractions and the great convenience of everything being within a relatively short distance has seen Cyprus property values increase steadily in the last few years.
Those shops include branches of many of the UK’s leading department stores including Marks & Spencers, Debenhams and Mothercare to name just a few. There are two main shopping streets; the first is the pedestrianised Ayiou Andreou (St Andrew’s Street) which in truth has many shops aimed at tourists but also has some good leather shops and several piled high with tablecloths and household linens of every design and colour imaginable The second main shopping street is Anexartisias Street with a wide range of good clothes shops for him and her – and junior too! Limassol also has a great selection of stores filled with furnishings and equipment for the home and several nearby industrial estates with factory shops for bargain fashions and home furnishings. So there is a large choice for people who buy sell Cyprus properties.
Limassol has a central market which starts at ‘the crack of dawn’ each morning and really is excellent with great fruit, vegetables, honey, nuts and all types of other produce – not surprisingly you’ll often spot a local restaurateur buying produce for his tables there! A great treat is an early morning wander round the market followed by breakfast in one of the cafes just outside. If it’s traditional Cypriot products you're after, the end of Ayiou Andreou nearest the castle and the numerous winding lanes close by are where you’ll find the craft workshops and the Cyprus Handicraft Centre. All the usual crafts are represented including some lovely old workshops where traditionally styled cooking pots are made and local herbs are dried and made into decorations for the home and beautiful soaps too. One particular workshop by Limassol Castle where huge brightly-coloured bags (used by local fishermen for storing their nets) are made and believe me after a day’s successful shopping these spacious bags are perfect for lugging all those goodies back to your Cyprus home!
