Larnaca District
Sitting on the curve of Lanarca Bay, Larnaca makes an excellent base to look at available Cyprus property in the central and Eastern areas of the island. It is actually the smallest of the prinicpal towns in Cyprus, even though it is home to the island’s largest international airport. This does of course mean it's very convenient for people who buy homes in Cyprus and would prefer not to travel very far by coach or car when visiting their holiday home.
Larnaca is a wonderful blend of marina, palm-lined promenade an ‘old quarter’, Grand Mosque area, beautiful church (Ayios Lazarus) a handful of modern shops and coffee houses. When it comes to ‘retail therapy’, Larnaca does not have the largest choice in European style shops – for that you’ll need to take a short 45 minute drive to Nicosia. Having said that the town does have several lovely fashion shops and some good menswear shops and a total imbalance with the number of shops stocking home furnishings, light fittings and all the other items needed when people buy sell Cyprus property.
Amongst the department stores in the town are two modest-sized branches of Marks & Spencers, Zako which is full of haberdashery, lingerie and hosiery for all the family and Ermes – a department store that is full of all the seasonal requirements and some great Christmas gift ideas. Villas in Cyprus are surprisingly spacious and you may have to make few more trips downtown than you imagine to get it all ship shape! There are several specialist shops including one for porcelain and another for tobacco and several European style supermarkets. In the old quarter of the town there are a number of craft workshops where the craftspeople can be watched as they make chairs, candles and shoes just the way their parents did before them. If you want to find the Cyprus crafts ‘under one roof’ the Cyprus Handicraft Centre in Cosmas Lysiotis has a wealth of locally made handicrafts.
If you want to experience a bit of authenticity, the Saturday fruit and vegetable market is always popular. Dozens of local farmers spread out their produce on tables and the prizes are amazingly good. At one stall there is an elderly couple selling their homemade Halloumi, whilst at another a lady dressed in black sells beautiful bunches of chrysanthemums. Behind the market stalls in a tiny butchery it is possible to buy delicious Lounza (smoked ham that has been soaked in red wine) and homemade loukanika – the local sausage that has been steeped in red wine and flavoured with herbs and when your arms are aching and you need a reviving coffee, just a short distance away are several pavement cafes where you can relax and watch the world go by. Living in Cyprus is an investment in lifestyle as well as the bricks and mortar values.
