Famagusta District

The eastern Famagusta District is rather unusual in that the town that gives its name to the area, is actually within the occupied North. In 1974 Turkey invaded Northern Cyprus and Famagusta town was where they halted that invasion. The once proud holiday resort portion of the town now lies partly enclosed within the buffer zone between the North and South … in every sense a ghost town. So the main towns of interest to people looking to buy Cyprus property in this area are Ayia Napa and Protaras. These are very popular resorts, well-known for their golden beaches and excellent water sports. Because of this there is a wide range of Cyprus property for sale in this area.

Protaras is famous because of its long strip of shops and bars - and extensive beach. There are literally hundreds of bars and restaurants making it ideal for the younger set who prefer a lively holiday. A visit to the fig tree bay area is especially recommended if you enjoy all kinds of water sports such as paracending and water skiing. Powerboats are available for hire by the hour and so you can take to the high seas yourself. The choice of places to eat is absolutely astonishing, with just about every kind of international cuisine available - including the ubiquitous Macdonalds, KFC and Pizza Hut of course.

Just 20 minutes from Protaras is Agia Napa the party capital of Cyprus. If you want night life that carries on 'til dawn then Agia Napa (also called Agia Napa) is the place to be. It's not just about partying until dawn though because the resort is also great for families and the beaches are magnificent. There's a bustling harbor too with many modern pleasure cruisers and traditional fishing boats. If you turn up there early enough you could find yourself bidding aginst the local restauranteurs who'll be down there buying some fresh fish for their diners. The town itself has plenty to offer in the way of shops and restaurants of every kind. If you are feeling adventurous there is the famous Nissi beach area with it's bungie jump crane and a whole lot more besides. Don't forget that Agia Napa also boasts one of the best water parks in Europe where you can scare yourself witless on the giant water slides.

With these great resorts nearby, the main eastern town of Paralimni also has some appeal. The countryside surrounding Paralimini is famous for its windmills which used to draw water from underground sources to irrigate the land. This part of Cyprus is known as 'kokkinochoria', the red soil villages. Many local people make their living from the very fertile land here, which supports a wide range of vegetables, fruit and grain - including the famous Cyprus potato. Villas in Cyprus don't get any more affordable than in the countryside a little back from the busy resorts.

If you fancy a spot of retail therapy Paralimni town is a great place to shop with plenty of boutiques and even a Marks and Spencers. After that you'll perhaps relax in one of the modern cafe bars dotted around the pretty town square or quaff a cool beer in one of the many tavernas. There are plenty of large supermarkets that sell all the normal foodstuffs - and much more besides. Local bakeries are springing up all over the place and are very poular as they are open 24 hours and sell all those wicked calorie-laden treats for those who have a sweet tooth.

Whether you're on holiday or thinking of living in Cyprus, you are sure to have a terrific time.  Your own Cyprus property in the Famagusta area will never disappoint you.
